English Morning Tea – Dinner Edition

And so began our monthly meetings, usually taking place on the first Wednesday in the month.
It was the same year that our children started learning English in grade 2 at school, and so I thought it would be an idea to send out an invitation to all the mothers of the second graders and invite them to my house to speak English. I was a bit hesistant in doing so because at the time was unsure if anyone would be interested.
I had about 13 replies to that morning and was really unsure how it would go. When I look back at it now, I remember all the pauses where no-one knew what to say. At the end of the morning after discussing nothing in particular, there were suggestions that we should make it a regular occurrence. And so it was decided that we would meet on the first Wednesday of each month and take it in turns at providing brunch at each others houses.
Our group has changed over the years, but several of us were at the first morning tea. Some of us can’t come anymore due to other committments, but we have also taken on new recruits whom we have welcomed with open arms. The days of not knowing what to say are over, and now the quality and quantity of the English spoken has improved immensely. We don’t have any specific subject, but just generally chat and have fun together.
After 5 years of English morning tea we decided it was time to do something together with our husbands, and so on Saturday 19th November we held an English evening with a Swiss accent at the home of Marlis and Dominik Haitz.
We commenced with apero and then salad and raclette, and ended up with English desserts. There was a minor problem in the beginning when we thought we would be eating hard cheese. When the raclettes were turned on, the electricity cut out and we were left in the dark twice! Fortunately this was rectified promptly.
It wasn’t compulsory to speak English during the evening, but most of us who could, did. After a couple of glasses of wine, the English spoken greatly improved, along with the quality of the jokes, and a good evening was had by all.
